Weekly Questions

1. When we read of great tragedies in history, we tend to think that we would have acted differently if we had been there. Can you see yourself in this passage? What would you be doing? 2. How are some of the characters in this passage similar to each other? How are they different?
3. What evidence is Mark presenting in his attempt to prove that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God?
4. How does Jesus’ silence actually communicate his identity? (See Isaiah 53:7-9.)
5. How has this passage affected your view of Jesus?

Homegroup Questions

1. Was there any aspect of the Holy Spirit’s work that was made more clearer to you through the sermon?  If so, what was that and why is that important?

2. We talked about the importance of having a “both/and” instead of an “either/or” approach to the work of the Spirit.  Read back through the two passages in Ephesians
a. Assurance - Ephesians 1:13-14
b. Power - Ephesians 5:15-18
c. Why are both important?

3. Consider the call in Ephesians 5 not to be controlled by wine but to be controlled by the Spirit.  What would be something in your life that you are tempted to be controlled by?  In what ways could you move towards a more Spirit-filled life?  (Discuss the metaphors of a glass being filled with water vs. a balloon being filled with air)

4. Now let us consider that fact that we can grieve and quench the Holy Spirit.  How are you most prone to do that?  Look at all of the admonitions in these verses and consider where you are prone to do the opposite:  1 Thessalonians 5:14-22
