Sermon Notes

Key Passage: John 15:1-11

Joy: the emotion of sheer delight

"Appreciation is packaged joy." -Chris Coursey

"...if we practice feeling appreciation for five or more minutes three times a day, any time of the day, our brain will reset normal to appreciation." -Jim Wilder

"Reading through the Bible and replacing it with the concept of God's face lighting up gives us a better idea of what joy means and how it feels in our bodies. For example, if we rewrite Psalm 16:11 using the fuller definition, 'In your presence is fullness of joy' becomes 'When your face lights up because you are so happy to be with me, you fill me up with joy.' In John 15, Jesus talks about how he loves his disciples with the same love that the Father has for him. Then he says, 'I've told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full.' If we replace joy with the fuller definition, Jesus' statement would be, 'My Father's face lights up when he sees me because I'm so special to him. I'm telling you this so that you feel how special you are to my Father and to me. Our faces are shining on you with delight.'" -Michel Hendricks
