Discussion Questions

1. How important is it that Jesus prayed for you and me (those who would receive Him as Savior many years later) as He was ready to suffer and die for our sins?
2. Jesus prayed that we would become “perfectly one.” He wanted us to be made “mature or complete” through the work of the Holy Spirit. Why does this unity that Jesus prayed for require hard work?
3. Why does being mindful of our “eternal destiny” help us to look at everything in our lives with an eternal perspective?
4. Why is it vital to show that we are Christians by our love?

Sermon Notes

Key Passage: John 17:20-26

“If you want to know someone’s heart, listen to him pray.” -Michael Card

“The glory the Father gave the Son found expression in the love between them, the signs Jesus performed, and the honor the Father bestowed upon Jesus, and the exaltation of Jesus after He laid down His life. The glory Jesus would give His disciples is similar. It is the glory of oneness with the Father and the Son mediated by the Holy Spirit.” -Colin Kruse

“This unity is achieved by common adherence to the gospel, by love that is self- sacrificing, by undaunted commitment to the shared goals of the mission with which Jesus’ followers have been charged by self-conscious dependence on God Himself for life and fruitfulness” -D.A. Carson

“Love ‘endures all things.’ This refers to a patient perseverance in loving. This is, perhaps, the hardest work of all, for many of us can be patient for a time, but the task is to hold on year after year. In reference to our fellow Christians, love holds out under all rebuffs. We endure not some things but all things for Christ’s sake. As to the unconverted, they may shut their ears and refuse to hear us — never mind, we can endure all things.” -Charles Spurgeon

Christ prayed specifically for three very crucial needs:
First, He prayed for our spiritual unity (John 17:20-23).
Second, He prayed for our eternal destiny (John 17:24).
Third, He prayed for our mutual love (John 17:25-26).
