Sermon Notes

Key Passage: 1 Corinthians 13:11

Speaking
Thinking
Reasoning

Recognize the compartmentalization of faith
Response: Disciple the next generation in real life through all of life

Philippians 4:11-13
Jeremiah 29:4-11

Recognize the difference between competing worldviews
Response: Expose the lie. Replace it with truth.
1 Peter 3:15
"The modern world is full of the old Christian virtues gone mad. The virtues have gone mad because they have been isolated from each other and are wandering alone. Thus some scientists care for truth; and their truth is pitiless. Thus some humanitarians only care for pity; and their pity (I am sorry to say) is often untruthful." ― G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy (1908)

Recognize the connection between faith and knowledge
Response: Slow cooked learning.

Hebrews 5:12-14

Recognize the importance of intentionality
Response: Outdo one another in showing honor

Proverbs 14:4
Romans 12:9-10

Values: Abiding and Bearing fruit
John 15:4-5
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Discussion Questions

1. Reread 1 Corinthians 13:11. Consider the three areas of growth: speaking, thinking, and reasoning. Is there a specific one of those God is highlighting to you that you need to consider in your life?
- If it's speaking, consider some follow-up Scriptures to review and meditate on: Luke 6:45, Proverbs 25:11, Proverbs 17:28, James 3:2-5.
- If it's thinking, read Romans 8:5-6. Consider practical ways that you can "set your mind" on God. One suggestion is to consider reading Scripture in the morning before you read anything else (social media, news, email, etc.).
- If it's reasoning, consider the worldview triangle that we discussed. How are your relationships and your inputs shaping the way that you see the world? Does any of that need to change?

2. Reread Romans 12:9-10. How can you show honor to people in the church family who are in a different generation than you? What does it look like to honor them?

3. Reread Hebrews 5:12-14. How are you moving from milk to solid food in your personal growth? Consider what you need to start doing and stop doing and continue doing. What action steps, rhythms, or habits do you need to continue or start in order to grow in maturity? What do you need to stop doing?

4. The only way that we grow personally and the only way that the next generation grows is by abiding in Jesus. Read John 15:1-17, paying special attention to verses 4 and 5. Write down your observations. Then turn those verses and observations into a prayer.
