Stages of Grief
Denial: This can’t be happening.
Anger: Why did this happen? Who is to blame?
Bargaining: Make this not happen and I will…
Depression: I can’t bear this; I’m too sad to do anything.
Acceptance: I acknowledge that this has happened, and I cannot change it.

Heidelberg Catechism
Q. What must you know to live and die in the joy of this comfort?
A. Three things: first, how great my sin and misery are; second, how I am set free from all my sins and misery; third, how I am to thank God for such deliverance.

Heidelberg Catechism (1563)
Q. What is your only comfort in life and in death?
A. That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.
He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation.
Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Discussion Questions

3DQ - 3 discipleship questions to ask each other: What is God saying to you? What are you going to do about it? How can I help?

1. What did the Holy Spirit highlight to you in the passage or the sermon?

2. In Matthew 5:4, Jesus speaks about those who “mourn” - this applies to all of us:
a. Have you mourned before? If so, what happened?
b. Where is there pain in your life right now?
c. Where in your life do you need to experience the comfort Jesus promises.

3. Many of us find it difficult to engage grief and likewise many of us often disassociate with sadness - how do the Scriptures instruct believers to engage grief/pain/mourning?

4. Read Ecclesiastes 7:4 - how do reflections on death and dying bring us closer to God?

5. In Matthew 5:4, Jesus promises comfort to those who are mourning. Russ talked about three ways that Jesus comforts us: His Word, His Spirit, and His People.
a. Which one of these do you most need to lean into right now?
b. How will you do that?

6. Read Isaiah 53:2-6 and then 1 Peter 2:24-26 - consider the specific ways in which you have sinned. Meditate on the reality of Jesus taking those sins.  And then give thanks to him for his forgiveness and His continual care for you. (Try this multiple times. You may find different aspects of both your own sin and of Christ’s faithfulness to you come to light.)

7. Read Revelation 21:4 - why is this an ‘anchor for the soul’? Which part of this promise do you resonate most with or draw hope from?
