Grace is not just pardon but it is also power

Guard - phylaxon -
It suggests keeping a kind of careful watch over something to preserve or protect it. So to guard something includes a watchful attentiveness to it to keep it from being somehow harmed. Paul is calling Timothy to guard "the good deposit" that is the gospel so that no person or thing causes it to be lost or damaged.

Entrust - paratheke -
To deposit a valuable spiritual heritage, such as the gospel, with someone who is expected to guard and faithfully disseminate it, implying deep trust in their character and competence.

"A man is not filled once for all with the Holy Spirit. We are leaky vessels, and we must stay under the fountain to remain full." - D.L. Moody

"The safest road to hell is the gradual one — the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings." - C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters, Letter XII

Three pictures of ministry that endure:
1. Soldier — single-minded loyalty that avoids entanglement in civilian pursuits
2. Athlete — unflinching integrity that runs according to the rules
3. Farmer — patient faith to work hard and trust God for growth

Discussion Questions
