Sermon Notes

Key Passage: Romans 6:1-14

1. The question: does grace change anything? (v.1)
2. The truth: you died to sin (v.2–10)
3. The implication: you don’t have to obey sin (v.11)

WHAT THIS DOES NOT MEAN
1. It does not mean you no longer want to sin.
2. It does not just mean “you shouldn’t sin”.
3. It does not mean you are slowly dying to sin.

The Big Shift of Romans 6
  • One side: Grace means sin doesn’t matter.
  • Other side: If I struggle, it means nothing has changed.
  • Truth: Sin is still active but sin is not your master anymore.

“If you want to keep sinning, you likely haven’t grasped what it means to be
united to Christ.” —John Piper

“Grace does not encourage sin—it breaks its power.” —John Stott

Holy Spirit, search us.
Reveal anything in us that is not like Jesus.
Where we have been passive with sin—wake us up.
Where we have believed lies—renew our minds.
Where we feel weak—remind us we are no longer slaves.
Purify our hearts.
Strengthen us to resist sin.
Make us a holy people.
We don’t want to just know about You—
we want to see You, experience You, and walk with You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
