Let Us Use Them (Like Jesus) (JICC)

Sermon Notes

Key Passage: Romans 12:3-8
John 7:37-39
John 5:19-20
John 14:12
Titus 3:5-6

Jesus is our model — two ways
  • Spiritual practices (disciplines) that tune our ear to the Father
  • Spiritual gifts that allow us to practically love and serve the people in front of us

FIXED — Whose am I?
• Adopted — Rom 8:15–16; Gal 4:4–7
• Sealed — Eph 1:13–14; 4:30; 2 Cor 1:21–22

FLOWING — How is he working through me today?
Water / river
  • Isa 44:3 — water on thirsty land; Spirit on offspring
  • John 4:10–14 — woman at the well  -- living water
  • John 7:37–39 — rivers of living water will flow from you (Spirit)
  • Acts 2:33 — Spirit is described as being poured out
  • Titus 3:5–6 — washing; Spirit poured out richly
Air / breath-wind
  • Gen 1:2 — Spirit/wind over the waters
  • John 3:8 — wind - hear the sound - don’t know where it’s coming from or where it is going / born of the Spirit
  • John 20:22 — Jesus breathed on them and said receive the Spirit
  • Acts 2:2 — sound like a mighty rushing wind

Central point: God doesn’t hand you a spiritual gift like a badge to wear; he puts you in a current — fixed in whose you are, flowing as you use what he gave you.

PRACTICAL LIST
  1. Gifts of the Spirit will always produce the fruit of the Spirit.
  2. Seeing misuse is no excuse for disuse. (ie. marriage is a gift, church is a gift -- but there are many bad examples). Look for good examples and follow those.
  3. Principles instead of formulas.  (think whitewater: Every trip down the river is unique.)  God is not a vending machine.
  4. How do I know my gift?
  • Church > tests. Tests help, but you can’t test what you’re ignorant of. Ask trusted people what they see in you
  • Pay attention to your prayers and desires.
  • Ask to be prayed for (1 Tim 4:14, 2 Tim 1:16).
  1. Start with the need in front of you. Instead of staring with “Am I gifted to do that?” … start with the need “What is the need right in front of me?”
  2. Default to action
