Sermon Notes
Key Passage: Romans 8:5-11
Galatians 5:19-24
Romans 8: Crown Jewel of Romans
Indwelling Sin Mindset vs. Indwelling Spirit Mindset
How do you set your mind on the Spirit?
Grace-Centric Effort: Grace is not opposed to effort; it's opposed to earning
Means of grace are the ordinary, God-appointed practices — especially the Word, Communion, and Prayer — through which the Holy Spirit fans into flame our faith, renews our dependence on Christ, and nourishes us in the Christian life.
"Use the means, and trust the Spirit." —William Perkins
"Grace is a habit infused by the Spirit"
The First Habit: Call upon the name of the Lord
The Second Habit: Reset your natural thinking with a complete takeover of your mind with the Word of God
The Third Habit: Put to death tempting thoughts
"The first blow is half the battle." —John Owen
"I am not going down that road" "Don't go there" "Stop" "No thank you"
The Fourth Habit: Make alive new thoughts
"Grace does not only take away the old, but brings in the new; it not only plucks up weeds, but plants flowers." —Thomas Goodwin
"The mind is the leading faculty; where it goes, the heart will follow." —John Owen
An Encouragement: Be in awe of your broken flesh, but be more in awe of the mighty power of God's Spirit
Galatians 5:19-24
Romans 8: Crown Jewel of Romans
Indwelling Sin Mindset vs. Indwelling Spirit Mindset
- Flesh mindset: self-willed desires.
- I want
- It is unsubmissive to God's will.
- Its fruit, i.e., the end result of its intent and focus, is this: Galatians 5:19-21
- Spirit mindset: God’s desires
- What God wants
- It is submissive
- Galatians 5:22-24
